about

SADLIBS is a chilling first glance at making a living from art. It mainly revolves around the effects of touring (both grand and sad) and what sacrifices I made to kick off this mad pursuit. It's a dance between glory and shame.

I wanted to melt genres with this album. It comes off as more of an experiment than my other music; I wanted to see what I was capable of and also wanted people listening to not expect what comes next. At that point in my life I experienced some buildups that led to disappointments, and I wanted to express that without letting down my listeners. An example is how serious the verse is in Fill in the SADLIBS compared to the hook - it's like laughing at yourself after realizing how serious you were being about things that don't really matter.

In the process of creating this album, some friends of mine had a bass player quit their band. Rather than call off the rest of their shows we joked about me filling in, which led to me taking the challenge. Another friend (Cody Horwood, who did the artwork for this album, Life in a Nutshell & You Don't Know Anything) lent me a bass he picked up years back and never really played. I had 3 weeks to learn and pulled it off well enough to keep things going. I played a few shows with Alone in the Universe and have been filling in ever since. I figured I'd try working the new skill into this album, so this is my first project where you'll hear live bass (Tracks 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 13) .

I was bouncing around living situations, cities and states while making this. There are different environments, different ambiance, different equipment. It all impacted the writing and mixing, which was more of a headache than mixing an album in a stable environment ever was. All in all it's like the first stage of accepting and embracing change and chaos, trying to let go of toxic shit and thrive.
